Yakuza 2
Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Yakuza 2 is a beat ‘em up/brawler game which is over the top and fun to play. I spent 20+ hours playing it but I didn’t complete every side mission.

Jaggi’s Northern Indian Cuisine
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
LSW, KKH, Pinky and I went for dinner at Jaggi’s Northern Indian Cuisine. It was a restaurant along Race Course Road, near Little India MRT. The moment I stepped in, I was strangely remembered of a canteen. The restaurant was brightly lit and everything was neat and clean. Decor was kept to the minimal, giving the restaurant a practical and efficient look. Dishes were displayed in metal trays on a metal counter.
We ordered the dishes we want at the counter, paid for them and carried them back to the table using a plastic tray. There were no labels identifying the food so we kept asking the owner whether he had this dish and this dish. Each table had a pitcher of plain water and metal cups can be collected from a side table.

Company D&D
Friday, October 23rd, 2009
It was the company’s D&D and the theme was Halloween. Our table didn’t really bother to dress up and we just went as we were. Blackhole pasted some fake black rose tattoos and Pandi brought his hair band which looked like a knife had passed through the head. Some of the younger ones were quite sporting and came with pale faces and sunken eyes. A table even took the effort to dress up as the scariest thing these few years – terrorists.
Dinner was not too bad, even though somehow we ended up at the same table as the big boss. Everyone behaved well. We were even more well-behaved than at Tong Xiang’s wedding. All of us heard rumours that big boss will not stay for the whole event so Blackhole, Sayang, Tong Xiang and I had a bet about when big boss would leave. In the end, we all lost. Big boss must had enjoyed the company very much because she stayed until the end. Even the CEO seemed to be enjoying himself and dropped by a few tables for a short chat.
After D&D, a group of us went for drinks. Sayang and I felt so tired afterwards that we decided to go home while a few went on to another place for more drinks. When I told Mao Mao, she concluded that we felt tired because we repressed ourselves to be on best behaviour during D&D.

Filming in the carpark
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Coming home, my bro and I spotted some people filming in the carpark. There was a bright white spotlight illuminating the whole carpark, so it was hard to miss. We went home and I went to look from the kitchen window. It was boring after a while because it took so long for them to get everything ready and just right. There seemed to be two characters in the show, a guy and a girl. The guy seemed to be a car washer. When I went to bed at almost 2am, they were still busy filming. Being an actor is not an easy life.

Julie & Julia
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009
I went to watch Julie & Julia with my brother. I saw the trailers showing on cable and was very tickled by the scene where Paul Child (Stanley Tucci) asked Julia Child (Meryl Streep) what she likes to do and she replied, “Eat!”
The Plot
The movie is about two interwoven stories about two women – Julia Child and Julie Powell (Amy Adams). The movie started with Julie’s story and ends with Julia’s story. You see a bit of Julie’s story then a bit of Julia’s story then a bit of Julie’s story and so on. But to make it less confusing, I’ve separated the stories.

Julie Powell
The movie starts with Julie and her husband, Eric Powell (Chris Messina), moving in a new home above a pizza parlour. As she tries to get use to her new place, work and turning 30, she turns to cooking as a source of comfort. One day, she decides to challenge herself by cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking within one year and blogs about her experience. Along the way, she manages to attract a big following on her blog and becomes a celebrity. After one year, she finished cooking all the recipes. Her story finishes with her and her husband paying a visit to a museum on Julia Child.

Julia Child
Julia Child’s story is set in 1950s. She and her husband, Paul Child, just moved to Paris as Paul is starting work in the French embassy. Julia fell in love with French cooking and enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu to learn how to cook. She met Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle who were writing a cooking about French cooking for Americans. Julia was invited to join them in writing the book to make it appeal to Americans. For the next decade, as Julia moved around due to her husband’s job, the three kept working on the book and keeping in contact through letters. The movie ends with Julia and Paul in the kitchen and opening up a parcel containing the published version of their cookbook.

Pooh Bear does the darnest thing
Friday, October 16th, 2009
Mao Mao had a craving for Burger King’s tendergrill burger. So Pooh Bear drove us to the outlet at Vivocity. Pooh Bear went off to run some errands while the rest of us proceeded to Burger King. I sat and guard the table while the rest went to order food. While waiting for them, I saw Pooh Bear walking past the table and straight to the counter. I guessed that she did not see me but I figured the rest in the queue would tell her where I was.
A few minutes later, I saw Pooh Bear walking back with Mao Mao tailing behind. Mao Mao looked like she was going to burst into hysterical laughter any minute. I knew immediately that something had happened. The moment both of them sat down, Mao Mao asked, “Do you know what she did?”
“No, the pillar blocked my view,” I replied. “What happened?”
And Mao Mao told me the whole story.
After Pooh Bear joined the rest in the queue, they began to discuss about what they are going to order for lunch. Then Pooh Bear excitedly asked, “Hey, what are you going to order?” as she grabbed the arm of a person standing in front of Sayang. And stared into the eyes of a shocked man. “Oops, sorry,” she said and quickly let go. Then feeling quite embarrassed, she asked Blackhole to help her order and hurried back to join me at the table.
Pooh Bear tried to explain that she thought I was standing with them in the queue and thought the person in front of Sayang was me.
Mao Mao immediately pointed out that the man was skinny and wearing totally different coloured clothes.
We decided to tell the rest who were not around the story of Pooh Bear getting touchy with a stranger at the fast food restaurant. They should share in the joy as well.

La Petite Cuisine
Sunday, October 11th, 2009
After a canopy walk at MacRitchie Reservoir in the morning, we went for lunch at a place suggested by Sayang. I’m not going to talk much about the walk. It’s tiring and not much fun.
Anyway, we went to this little french outlet at Serene Centre, serving affordable French food. There were outdoor and indoor seats and we chose indoor because of the aircon. To keep costs low, it was self-service. We had to place our orders and collect our food from the counter. Plain water is available in a dispenser at the side.
The dishes listed on the menu are written using french words eg. confit de canard with gratin. There were no descriptions so sometimes we had to guess what a particular word meant.
