Tong Xiang’s wedding

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Tong Xiang’s wedding dinner was on a Tuesday so most of us went straight after work. Blackhole, Sayang and I hitched a ride in Pandi’s car to Hyatt Hotel. Spider was the receptionist and the first thing she said when she saw us was, “You’re sitting at the VIP table (read: bosses’ table).” Of course I didn’t believe her and I tried to take the sitting list from her. Spider held on to the other end of the paper and both of us refused to let go. Anyway, we managed to confirm that we are NOT sitting at the VIP table and the VIP table is far away from us.

Our table was right at the back of the room, with all the other tables made up of office people too. Tong Xiang is an outgoing person so there were quite a few tables of office people. We joked that it was like a mini D&D. A lot of guys made use of the opportunity to drink and make a lot of noise. So of them were quite gone and the next day, we heard funny stories of what they did.

It was a pretty fun wedding. There was a solemnization ceremony before dinner and Tong Xiang was obviously quite happy to be married. He replied, “With all my heart” when asked if he would take her as his wife. Most people would have just simply said “yes” but Tong Xiang had to be different. Of course there were also photos shown but instead of the from-child-to-adult photos, Tong Xiang only showed photos of them together. Tong Xiang did up a humourous powerpoint presentation about his thoughts of the marriage. Then his wife sang him a song she had prepared secretly. The couple looked at each other while she sang and she giggled halfway through. Later on we found out that it was because Tong Xiang took away the lyrics and wanted to make her sing from memory. After a while, the couple took to the stage again and thanked us. When Tong Xiang said, “… my new wife”, the office people picked up on it and a lot of us went, “What happened to the old one?” So Tong Xiang corrected himself, “My new and ONLY wife.”

I enjoyed dinner as some of the dishes were quite nice and the company was good. I drank 6 half-filled glasses of wine. Everytime I wanted another glass, I would point to Blackhole, who was sitting on my left, and told the waiter that this lady wanted another glass. The only thing I didn’t like was that I was sitting right under the aircon duct and it was so very cold. Although the wine did warm me up somewhat, I regretted not bringing my jacket along. I’m quite sure that I would be sick the next day as towards the end of dinner, I was already sniffing badly.

Kashmir

Monday, September 28th, 2009

LSW, KKH, Twin and I went to Little India for dinner. Our plan was to walk pass the row of restaurants along Race Course Road and pick the one the interests us. We stopped to read the menu of Kashmir restaurant and the owner came out to talk to us. The owner was friendly but not overly pushy. Since the prices looked alright, we decided to try the restaurant. It was a small restaurant and got quite noisy during our meal. I’m not sure whether it was because the restaurant was small or because there was a big gathering of over 10 people who excited to see each other and talked at the same time.

We were shown to our table and a waiter came with a pitcher of water and a bowl. Both the pitcher and the bowl were made of copper. At first I thought it was for drinking, then the waiter told us it was for us to wash our hands. We placed our hands over the bowl and the waiter poured water over them. This was the first time I got such a treatment at a restaurant and it made the experience felt pretty luxurious.

Butterfly shed at HortPark

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

The previous times when we went to Hort Park, the butterfly shed was always close. Then I found out that the butterfly shed was open on the last Saturday of each month. So Blackhole, KKH and I decided to go there to take a look. The butterfly shed was quite small so only a limited number of people could be inside at one time. We waited for a while and then it’s our turn.

There were other people queuing up to enter the shed so we couldn’t stay for long. There were staff in the shed who kept us moving as well as answer any questions we might have. I saw more butterflies in the shed than in the whole of Hort Park. They were quite skittish and often didn’t stop long enough for us to take photos of them. The butterflies were about the same as those I saw in Changi Airport Terminal 3 but the airport ones were more lethargic.

Peperoni Pizzeria

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

We went to Peperoni Pizzeria again for Bright Eyes’ farewell. Even though Bright Eyes asked for pot luck, most of us are less than competent cooks so we decided to save the rest the agony and got out to some place nice for lunch instead. We went back to Peperoni Pizzeria because Bright Eyes liked the pizzas. We had fun even though Bright Eyes looked a bit tired nowadays.

Fullerton Hotel’s baileys mooncakes

Monday, September 21st, 2009

Fullerton baileys mooncake

After hearing so much about it, I finally made went down to Fullerton Hotel this year and bought their famous baileys mooncakes. Needless to say I was looking forward to eating it.

Fullerton baileys mooncake

It was a full size snowskin mooncake. Because it is quite big, the snowskin is also thicker than in mini snowskin mooncakes. Inside was chocolate lotus paste and a chocolate ball in the middle. I’m not sure whether it was because my expectations were quite high but I was a little disappointed after eating it. I can’t taste any baileys at all. I might not mind so much about not tasting the baileys if it was a cheap mooncake. But at $50+ for 4 mooncakes, I would expect to be able to taste the alcohol.

This year, my favourite snowskin mooncakes are still the mini champagne mooncakes from Raffles Hotel.

After the wedding…

Games Convention Asia

After Mr Tuna’s wedding, I met Bell and we went to the Games Convention Asia at Suntec. It was quite a small convention and looks somewhat sad as that is a big empty space at the back, as if they couldn’t fill up the exhibition hall. The EA booth made the most impression as it showcased a few good-looking games that are currently in development. Bell and I checked out that games and added them to a list games we want to buy after we finally get a Playstation 3.

Auction at Games Convention Asia

There was also an auction going on and people were bidding for rare items found in an online game. The proceeds will be given to charity but it was still amazing that people are willing to fork out that much money to pay for a virtual item. We lingered on for a while, checking out all the games and then left.

Mr Tuna’s wedding

Saturday, September 19th, 2009

Raffles Hotel

I attended a wedding of my colleague, Mr Tuna, at Raffles Hotel. In his wedding invitation, the attire was listed as casual. Curious, some of us asked him when he gave out the cards, what was meant by casual. Mr Tuna told us that we could wear jeans and basically, just dress as if we are going to work. It was very nice of him.

It seemed that weddings nowadays followed a certain format. First, photos of the groom from baby to adult were shown, then photos of the bride from baby to adult and finally photos of both of them together. For Mr Tuna’s wedding, after the photos of childhood to adult were shown, there was a video clip of how the two of them met. Someone used The Sims 3 to create the video. I was a little thrilled to see it because I wanted to play the game ever since I heard about it but my pc is not powerful enough.
